The City took a significant step toward smarter urban mobility with the successful launch of free Wi-Fi at Rea Vaya stations across Johannesburg.
A vibrant launch event at the Soccer City Rea Vaya station on Monday, 31 March 2025, marked the culmination of the free Wi-Fi rollout project led by the Metropolitan Trading Company (MTC).

Commuters can now access seamless internet connectivity via the “Joburg Free Wi-Fi” SSID, transforming daily commutes into productive, connected experiences. The initiative aims to enhance productivity, provide entertainment, facilitate information access, and strengthen social connections for thousands of residents.
City officials, including MMC for Transport, Cllr Kenny Kunene and MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, hailed the project as a milestone in Joburg’s digital transformation.
“In the spirit of global collaboration reflected in the G20, Johannesburg is bridging the digital divide,” Kunene said.
“This initiative is about more than just internet access; it’s about building an inclusive and smart city where every commuter has the tools to thrive in the 21st century. It aligns with our vision of a modern, interconnected Johannesburg that empowers its people.”
The Wi-Fi rollout is a key component of the City’s broader digital rehabilitation programme, led by MTC. With 25 BRT stations now online and further expansion planned, the initiative is laying the foundation for a cohesive and accessible digital ecosystem.
“MTC is proud to deliver this essential service to Joburg’s commuters,” said MTC CEO Thedi Moropa. “We are committed to leveraging technology to improve the urban experience, and this rollout is a testament to that commitment. It’s about making Johannesburg a more liveable, efficient, and connected City for all.”
The MTC will monitor network performance and user feedback to ensure optimal service delivery and continuous improvements. The initiative marks a pivotal step in the municipality’s journey toward becoming a leading smart city.
